Starbase 97 is a Federation Regula-class station located in deep space near the border with the Tzenkethi Coalition and Ferengi Alliance. Crucially, it stands at the periphery of the Ionite Nebula, and has for decades been charged with the scientific study and strategic monitoring of the nebula.
Lying only some light-years away from Barzan, its security is assured by the massive Starbase 38, which ensures SB-97 is provided with supplies and relief as needed. Nevertheless, life on the outpost can be isolating, and duties aboard torn between study of the fascinating nebula, and a need to consistently monitor it for potential threats.
