The USS Redemption (NCC-78240) is a Sovereign-class exploratory cruiser assigned to the Fourth Fleet, and is attached to Gateway Station, the headquarters of Sirius Squadron. It is under the formal command of station commander Fleet Captain Jericho, who routinely leads from the front on operations into the Midgard Sector. Her day-to-day operations are overseen by her XO, Commander Malhotra, who oversees the ship in the absence of Captain Jericho.
While refitted and modernised over the years, the Redemption’s age and profile still see her considered, like most Sovereign-class ships, as a workhorse in the Starfleet of the 25th century. Nevertheless, she is a powerful vessel with a striking profile, and her assignment to Gateway Station and the Midgard Sector is a signifier of the region’s clear importance to the Federation. She is responsible for flag-flying missions, diplomatic outreach, logistical support and, when needed, high-level defensive operations, both within and beyond Federation space.
With the increased tensions with the Klingon Empire and closer relations to the Romulan Republic that they threaten, Redemption is a cornerstone of Federation peace, prosperity, and security in the Midgard Sector. Alongside these strategic needs, she supports the continued outreach to the fallen worlds of the former Romulan Star Empire, and their exploration and support.
Design and Layout
As part of the wave of Sovereign-class ships built after the Dominion War, the Redemption has received multiple upgrades and refits over the course of her quarter-century of service. These improvements have kept her on a competitive footing with more modern ships. She has, however, retained most of the same aesthetics she held when originally built: decks are carpeted, the upholstery and fixtures retain rich, warm colours, though she does not share the outright opulence of larger explorers such as the Galaxy or Odyssey-class, with a more utilitarian presentation. Her captains have, over the decades, sought to preserve this appearance; once, it represented the height of Starfleet's power, while now it remains symbolic of a bygone golden era.
Bridge
The Redemption retains the same bridge layout and design she bore upon launch. The design moves away from the tactical arch made popular by the Galaxy-class, with the command chairs positioned independently in the centre, the commanding officer's at a slight elevation. The seat to the captain's right is reserved for the executive officer, while the left is for guests and mission advisers. While previous bridges had many consoles, if not most, flush with the bulkhead, the Redemption has the most key positions at stand-alone workstations, including Science and Tactical.
