The Dhelan-class warbird is the Romulan Republic's new generation of bird of prey, designed to replace the aging Malem-class. Compact, agile, and heavily armed for its size, the Dhelan revives a partially completed 23rd-century prototype design that never entered production under the Romulan Star Empire. Updated with modern systems and aesthetics, it embodies the Republic's emphasis on adaptable, efficient warships capable of excelling in a variety of mission profiles. Its combination of speed, stealth, and firepower makes it an ideal platform for fast response operations, precision strikes, and forward reconnaissance.
Exploration and Science
The Dhelan is not a dedicated science vessel, but it carries a capable and modular sensor suite tailored for forward reconnaissance and preliminary scientific work. Passive long-range arrays and specialized sensor pallets enable the detection of electromagnetic, gravimetric, and subspace anomalies without compromising signature discipline. At the same time, short-range deployable probe drones and microprobes allow the ship to gather physical data and environmental samples. A compact analysis bay provides basic processing, sample triage, and data compression so high-fidelity findings can be relayed to dedicated science ships or fleet command.
In practice, the Dhelan serves as the Republic fleet's forward eyes: it locates and characterizes hazards, tags anomalies for follow-up study, and conducts rapid-site surveys that inform tactical and scientific decisions. Its modular mission bays make it straightforward to outfit a vessel for temporary survey, atmospheric entry reconnaissance, or biological sampling runs, though long-term or in-depth research tasks are passed to dedicated science platforms.
Diplomacy
Similar to exploration, the Malem is equipped with the most barebones of diplomatic facilities. It could, theoretically, entertain a small diplomatic contingent if the need arose or an emergency diplomatic incident was at hand. However, much like exploration, the Malem would be more likely than not to report its findings back to the nearest starbase or outpost so that a more equipped warbird could be deployed.
Engineering
The Dhelan-class is smaller and more streamlined than the Republic's heavy warbirds, trading armor mass for speed and maneuverability. Its forward-swept wing design provides excellent firing arcs for its primary disruptor arrays, while an underslung torpedo launcher offers concentrated strike capability. Advanced inertial dampeners and vector control systems allow the ship to perform complex maneuvers that larger warbirds cannot match.
Internally, the Dhelan features modular systems that can be swapped or upgraded quickly, allowing the class to adapt to specialized mission roles such as reconnaissance, strike operations, or electronic warfare. Its singularity core is optimized for low maintenance and high efficiency, providing excellent range, particularly under cloak, without sacrificing speed.
Tactical
The Dhelan is designed to operate both independently and as part of a larger task force. In solo missions, it excels at ambush tactics with its powerful forward, wing-mounted disruptors, striking quickly from cloak before enemy defenses can respond. In fleet engagements, it is often deployed as a flanking unit or rapid-response interceptor, hunting down vulnerable enemy vessels or breaking through blockade points. Its disruptor arrays and torpedo systems are tuned for rapid cycling, enabling sustained damage output during drawn-out engagements.
Stealth remains a key advantage of the Dhelan, and its enhanced cloaking device allows it to approach undetected, gather intelligence, and retreat without revealing its position. In the hands of a skilled commander, it can control the pace of battle through precise strikes and quick disengagements.
Shipboard Life
Although compact compared to heavy warbirds, the Dhelan is not without its comforts, uniquely above and beyond what a bird of prey would normally be equipped with. The ship's crew quarters are more spacious than those of the Malem, and communal spaces such as the mess hall and recreation room were deliberately designed to maintain morale during extended deployments. Commanders often personalize their ships with banners, cultural art, and gardens in the Romulan style, making each vessel a reflection of its crew. While the Dhelan lacks the luxury of larger flagships, it offers a balance of practicality and livability well-suited to the Republic’s professional naval crews.
Class History
Following the formation of the Romulan Republic, many Malem-class warbirds continued to serve as the fleet's backbone. While effective during the Republic's early years, the Malem’s aging systems, short operational range, and high maintenance requirements began to limit its usefulness in sustained fleet actions. In searching for a replacement, engineers uncovered records of a late 23rd-century Star Empire design intended to be a fast, maneuverable predator for border skirmishes against the Federation. A prototype hull, never completed due to shifting political priorities, was found in a decommissioned Imperial shipyard.
The Republic's fleet engineers recognized the potential of the design and adapted it for modern needs. Outdated systems were stripped out in favor of compact, high-output singularity cores, integrated weapons arrays, and improved shield emitters. The resulting vessel was faster, easier to maintain, and could operate for longer periods without resupply. The Dhelan entered service in 2400 as a new-generation bird of prey, carrying forward the legacy of its predecessors while meeting the demands of a Republic that now fights to protect, not dominate.
In Play
- The Dhelan is the brand new, state-of-the-art bird of prey for the Romulan Republic. It is akin to when the Defiant was brand new for Starfleet. They're quick, agile, and pack a punch.
- Because they're so new, they aren't incredibly common but are beginning to phase out the Malem as the years go on.
- Due to the Dhelan being a bird of prey and a brand new design, a lot of officers look for these assignments.
