USS Babylon
More actions
USS Babylon is a Grissom-class surveyor assigned to Task Force 17 under the command of Captain Sanjiv Anand. Ostensibly intended for deep space mapping assignments, the Babylon’s primary mission is to follow up on reports of extinct civilizations on the edge of Federation space and determine if further study of these locations would be safe and ethical.
History
The Babylon is a fairly new ship, being one of the first 200 Grissom-class surveyors ordered after the successful development and shakedown cruise of the prototype in 2398. Built at the Sol VI shipyards, she entered service in 2399 and spent the next two years mapping the rimward borders of Federation space. In March 2401, upon the retirement of her previous commanding officer, she was transferred to Bravo Fleet for exploration in the region beyond Deep Space 17.
However, the appearance of the Lost Fleet in the Deneb Sector altered those plans. The Babylon was dispatched to locate a spaceborne lifeform that had been reported attacking Dominion ships. Upon making contact with the creature (dubbed Gomthree), the Babylon was able to escort it to a safer habitat in the vicinity of the Paulson Nebula.[1]
From March 2401 to April 2402, the ship was performing extensive stellar surveys under the auspices of the Delta Exploration Initiative.
In May 2402, the Babylon was sent back to the Alpha Quadrant to be refitted for new mission parameters.
Configuration
Main article: Grissom-class surveyor
The USS Babylon features a largely standard layout. Six of its nine labs are reconfigurable by nature, and therefore did not have to undergo extensive remodeling when the ship took on new mission parameters in May 2402. The stellar cartography lab and one of the two astrometrics labs are standard, while the second astrometrics lab has been adapted for the concurrent study of temporal mechanics as part of an ongoing astrochronometrics study.
Like other ships of its class, the Babylon features a Long-Term Engineering Hologram, though the Babylon’s hologram bears a striking resemblance in appearance and personality to the ship’s current chief engineer.[2]
Auxiliary Craft
The Babylon has room for only two shuttles, both Type-6A: the Nineveh and the Uruk.
