Starbase 234 is a Federation Watchtower-class station located in the Coleran system, near the United Federation of Planets’ spinward border. Lying less than ten light-years from the Azure Nebula, with the chaotic Triangle region beyond it, SB-234 has a long history of standing sentinel over this tumultuous sector.
With much of its responsibility for security now superseded by the construction of the more-advanced Starbase 86, SB-234 stands firmly in the second line of these border duties. While this includes monitoring the Triangle and borders with the Romulan Republic and Klingon Empire, SB-234 also plays a key role in the continuous scientific study of the Azure Nebula and the charting of its depths.
