Namesake
The USS Adelaide draws its name both from the city in the former nation of Australia and a series of ships that have served either in the Australian navy, or in Starfleet under the same name.
- HMAS Adelaide: a Town-class light cruiser commissioned in 1922 and decommissioned in 1946
- HMAS Adelaide: an Adelaide-class frigate commissioned in 1980 and decommissioned in 2008
- HMAS Adelaide: a Canberra-class landing helicopter dock ship commissioned in 2015 decommissioned in 2042
- USS Adelaide: a Constitution-class starship commissioned in 2247 and destroyed in 2250
- USS Adelaide: a Miranda-class starship commissioned in 2295 and decommissioned in 2234
The ships all were named after the city of Adelaide which in turn was named in honour of Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen, wife of King William IV of England. The city was founded in 1836 as the planned capital for the only freely settled British province in Australia, distinguishing it from Australia's penal colonies. The city is now the most populous of the southern part of the Australian continent.
