History
2402
The Atlas was built and launched from Avalon Fleet Yards in late 2402. Command of the ship was given to Captain Corbin after his previous vessel, the Columbia, was damaged by a subspace shockwave when it had saved stranded ships from the Delta Quadrant. The entire crew of the Columbia was reassigned to the Atlas to ensure it was launched on time. However, repairs to the Columbia were completed before the Atlas was launched. It wasn't long before news reached Avalon that the Columbia had been lost while defending the Andorian system during the Vaadwaur invasion. The Columbia's destruction motivated its former crew to push forward with the Atlas to aid in rebuilding the Federation.
During a short ceremony, the ship was launched in late October 2402 and was sent to the Shackleton Expanse to start exploration and diplomatic efforts in this new unrestricted region.
