USS Federation (NCC-78541) is a Dreadnought-class Federation starship currently assigned to Fourth Fleet's Fleet Operations. She is currently under the command of Captain Takemura Masaru.
History
The starship Federation was the second Dreadnought-class starship built, following the class's return to production in 2371. Completed in 2374, Federation was able to contribute to several key battles in the Dominion War, but largely remained out of the spotlight due to Starfleet Command's desire to keep enough combat-ready ships in the Federation's key systems to keep fighting if the front lines fell. Befitting her name, Federation was one of several designated command ships that would take on members of the Federation's civilian government should Earth be directly threatened. Following protocol, Federation evacuated the majority of the Federation Council during the Breen Attack on Earth in 2375—her captain's disgust at being ordered by Starfleet Command to leave while the battle was still ongoing led to her resignation from Starfleet.
Following the Dominion War, Federation participated in rebuilding efforts and embarked on limited exploratory missions, but she was considered surplus to requirements by the mid-2380s. With Starfleet's resources flowing into the Romulan evacuation, Federation was one of the first Dreadnought-class starships to be mothballed at Avalon Fleet Yards.
During the close of 2401, Federation was modernized and brought back into service with the Fourth Fleet, in response to the events of Frontier Day and the Lost Fleet Crisis.
