"Periculum Est Negotium Nostrum" (Risk is our Business)
USS Kirk (NCC-89951) is a Shran-class Federation starship currently assigned to Fourth Fleet's Task Force 72. Under the command of Lieutenant Commander Lane Hanley, the Kirk is tasked with an ongoing mission of border patrol and interdiction along the former Demilitarized Zone and the space around the Bajoran Wormhole.
The second starship to bear the name of one of Starfleet's most mercurial and divisive Admiral's, the ships motto is derived from a famous quote from the legendary James T Kirk, "Risk is our business. That's what this starship is all about. That's why we’re aboard her." and Hanley and her crew often find themselves in harms way as the vessel defends the bounds of the Federation through customs and anti - piracy cruises. The constant threat of both the True Way and the New Marquis only adds further complication to a UFP that has been sorely tested during recent crises such as Frontier Day and the invasion by the Vaadwaur Supremacy, yet still the crew of the Kirk stand the 'Thin Blue Line'.
Bridge
Compact and efficient, the bridge is situated on Deck #1 and reflects the design ethos of the 25th Century with clean lines, metallic finishes and a functional aesthetic. Whilst an improvement on that afforded by its predecessor, the Defiant-class, this space makes extensive use of holo-displays to compensate for its limited size.
The Captain's chair is central to the command space, situated on a raised dais and flanked by rails served by holo - interfaces for the CO's use. Immediately aft of the 'Big Chair' is the entrance to the small conference lounge. This entrance is flanked with doors leading to the connecting corridor and the turbolift access.
Fore of the command - chair, the dais steps down to a single helm console for the CONN station, which is flanked to port by the tactical station and starboard to the science station. A set of steps intersect these stations, leading down a shallow gallery abounding the main viewscreen, where two standing holo consoles (one of which is typically manned by Operations) flank the central island.
